A large crowd of protestors on Main Street in front of the Union Bank building (right background), 1919 General Strike, Winnipeg, Manitoba. |
This "silent parade" was called by returned pro-strike soldiers in defiance of Mayor Gray's ban on parades. A noisy meeting had been held at City Hall the night before. The mayor feared lest violence erupt if Specials fought with this parade, since there were soldiers on both sides. The demonstrators declared that they would hold the parade. It was exactly the catastrophe the Strike Committee had been trying to avoid since May 22, 1919. |

Between 4 & 5 P.M. Some 200 Specials Armed With Wagon Spokes And Baseball Bats, Are Seen Marching West Along Portage Avenue After Clearing Portage And Main Streets, Past The Oldfield Kirby And Gardiner Building. As The Specials Marched On Crowds, Bats, Fists, Stones, Bricks And Broken Bottles Began To Fly. Mayor Gray Had Told The Leader Of The Mounted Specials That He Would Shortly Read The Riot Act And That Would Enable The Royal Northwest Mounted Police To Be Brought In And Firearms To Be Used If Necessary. Thus He Almost Precipitated The Bloodbath That Would Finally Occur Eleven Days Later |
